Aged Care Perceptions and Attitudes: Survey Results
In 2010, Resthaven commissioned research into the attitudes, awareness and perception of South Australians towards aged care. Four hundred South Australian adults (aged 18+) were surveyed.

What Does the Research Show?
Those surveyed were asked what the phrase ‘quality aged care’ meant to them. Almost two in five (38%) responded that they thought it meant caring for/looking after the aged, and looking after the needs of older people.
Other responses included:
- Respect, dignity/quality of life for the aged (14%)
- Aged care facilities/homes for the aged/accommodation (14%)
- Providing good quality services and accommodation for the aged (18%).
More than two-thirds (67%) of those surveyed had had some experience, either personally or through family/friends, with services provided for older people. This is a 5% increase in exposure to aged care services in the general population since April 2008.
The most common exposure to aged care services was through aged care facilities (up 11% since April 2008), or through home support services, such as meals service or home nursing (up 1% since April 2008).
The overwhelming majority (81%) of those who indicated that they had an experience with services provided to older people indicated that their experience was positive. Almost two thirds (64%) of the group indicated that this had had a positive influence on their opinions and attitudes towards services for older people.
Only 14% of respondents indicated that their experience was negative. Of this group, 22% indicated that their previous experience had a negative influence on their opinions and attitudes. The main reasons given for this were due to understaffing or lack of facilities.
The overwhelming majority (94%) of those surveyed indicated that they place a lot of value on the work done by those working in the aged care industry.
When respondents were asked what information was important to assist them to make a decision about aged care services, more than two in five (41%) identified quality of care, whilst other responses included quality of accommodation (19%), access to services (17%), cost of services (16%) and availability of information (16%).
Those surveyed were asked to rate, on a scale of 1 to 5 (where 5 is strongly agree and 1 is strongly disagree) their level of agreement with a number of statements relating to aged care.
Extremely high levels of agreement were recorded for the following:
- Working with older people is an important job in the community (average rating of 4.8 out of 5)
- It is important that there is an adequate workforce who are able to provide services and assistance for older people (average rating of 4.8 out of 5)
- The level of government funding to aged care providers should be indexed to keep pace with wage increases (average rating of 4.6 out of 5).
Most respondents also agreed that the Government should give an allowance to older people to choose and pay for their own aged care (average rating of 4.0 out of 5).
An average rating of 3.8 out of 5 was recorded for that statement that older people who can afford it should contribute to the cost of their own care.
Many respondents (61%) of those surveyed outlined up to one month was an acceptable length of time to be waiting for aged care support.
