The Culture and Spiritual Life of Older People in Residential Aged Care

treeFlinders University, together with Resthaven, are undertaking a research project to investigate what culture and spiritual life means to older people living in residential aged care facilities.

Culture and spirituality mean many different things to people. But what does this really mean as a resident living in one of the Resthaven facilities?

It is anticipated that the information that is gathered will assist Resthaven staff to provide the best possible service and environment for residents.

Open Days

Periodically, Resthaven holds open days to offer the general public an opportunity to visit, learn more about the services offered and demystify aged care. See events above for more details.

Port Elliot public consultation
Public information session for residents at Elliot Gardens

Port Elliot

On 20 July, two information sessions were held at Port Elliot to provide interested people within the Port Elliot community with an overview of the development application proposed for the site of the old Port Elliot Primary School, 50 North Terrace, Port Elliot.

The Development application has been formally lodged with the Alexandrina Council, and will involve the normal community consultation and approval process that is required for such a development. Resthaven Port Elliot will accommodate 92 older people, 57 high and 35 low level care places. We hope that construction will commence in 2012 and be completed by late 2013.

Pt Elliot public information session held at the Uniting Church HallFacing North Terrace, the original old school house building is to be retained for use as meeting and training rooms, supporting the facility. Also facing North Terrace, located in the Heritage (Conservation) Residential Zone, are four proposed independent living units, to cater for people seeking retirement unit accommodation.

January Building Progress: Resthaven Mount Gambier January Building Progress: Resthaven Mount Gambier

Resthaven Mount Gambier is now operational. The building is pictured here on the open day, held on 29 June, 2011. Picture of 'Turn the Turf' ceremony at Mt Gambier

On the 26th of November, 2009, Resthaven was proud to officially begin construction of a state of the art residential aged care facility, adjacent to the Uniting Church at 24 Elizabeth Street, Mt Gambier.

With site preparation work complete, the Turn the Turf ceremony marked the commencement of building works to establish the new residential aged care facility. On Monday February 1, 2010, the builders commenced work on the concrete slab.

The first stage of the project cost approximately $20 million. When complete and fully operational, it will offer approximately 100 jobs.

The facility provides services for older people who need short term respite care, and a specific area which meets the needs of those with dementia. It offers high care (nursing home), low care (hostel), and respite accommodation to serve the community of Mount Gambier and surrounding areas.

Resthaven has been offering community services throughout the Limestone Coast for several years. Residential care accommodation will complement these services.

Lifestyle Choices - Consumer Directed Care

A trial of the Consumer Directed Care model of service at Western Community Services, was called 'Resthaven Lifestyle Choices', building on the existing program, which has become 'Lifestyle Choices Plus'.

The aim of the program is for clients to have more control and say about the services they receive. Being part of the trial means that clients are asked to complete a self assessment and they are provided with a monthly budget plan showing the funds available for their package and how these have been spent.

In May 2010, the Australian Government invited application for funding of Consumer Directed Care (CDC) in community aged care programs. Providers are to deliver innovative service models which provide care recipients and their carers with greater control over the design and delivery of the care and services received.

Resthaven was successful in this process, with 15 CDC packages allocated. Recently, additional funding of consumer directed care packages was announced.

Lifestyle Choices Plus

For a number of years, Resthaven has offered a full private fees-based community home care service.

The fee paying service offers the opportunity for people who wish to access community aged care to do so, without the need for a government subsidised service. Lifestyle Choices Plus can support people living independently at home in the community, or as an addition to services provided in residential care.

All Resthaven Community Services teams can arrange Resthaven Lifestyle Choices Plus.
