Profiles and Stories
A few of our people share their experience of Resthaven.
Scott - Manager
I started in aged care as a personal carer in Melbourne, approximately 20 years ago, cleaning false teeth and handing out suppers.
I worked my way up, becoming an Enrolled Nurse, then a Registered Nurse, before working at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, then Dandenong Hospital, doing Intensive Care. This was followed by three years overseas, nursing in London and York.
On my return to Adelaide, I worked in the spinal unit at Royal Adelaide Hospital, before moving to RDNS, where I spent the next seven years. Here, I worked my way up from Registered Nurse to Clinical Nurse, then Clinical Nurse Consultant.
Eventually, I decided I wanted to go back to my original love, which was residential aged care. When trying to work out which organisation I wanted to work for, I started asking the older people I encountered as part of my community work where they would like to live. They all said “Resthaven,” and the rest is history.
I came to Resthaven in 2007 as Care Coordinator at the Leabrook site, where I spent four happy years. Recently, I was given the opportunity to manage Resthaven Bellevue Heights.
Here, I am in charge of and responsible for the site. I am responsible for the residents and the care they receive. I am focused on ensuring residents’ choices are realised and that standards at the facility meet with the Aged Care Accreditation Agency’s rigorous standards.
I love working in aged care – you can learn so much from older people, if you just take the time to listen. At the end of the day, it’s all about enjoying what you do.
Kathy - Community Services Coordinator
My career started in 1977 as a volunteer in an aged care facility, working with the elderly. From there, I followed my passion for cooking and completed a 4 year apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery. I then worked as a chef in various establishments for the next 20 years, before thinking of a career change.
I became a volunteer tutor with English Language Services, teaching English to adult migrants. I then moved to the field of aged care, and was soon employed as a Carer and Post Discharge Support Worker, before finally joining Resthaven as a Home Support Worker in 2003. I had a lot of support from my Manager in this position, for which I am very appreciative. In 2006, I was asked to help out in the office, then became a Program Assistant five months later.
The following year, I applied and was successful for a Coordinator position. I have been doing this job ever since, and I am very passionate about it. The primary objective of my role is to deliver high quality, individualised community services packages to clients with complex care needs, which gives them the opportunity to remain living independently in their own homes.
Having recently completed Certificate 4 in Home and Community Care, I am very grateful to Resthaven for giving me the opportunity to learn many new skills and grow as a person.
Lydia - Public Relations Assistant
I started working for Resthaven in September 2009. I grew up in Adelaide, and graduated with a Media and Communications degree from the University of South Australia in 2004. I then lived interstate for several years.
Whilst interstate, I worked as a Media and Communications Officer for several Federal politicians.
I moved back to Adelaide in July 2009, and it was then that I decided to leave politics for a career path that was more personally rewarding and fulfilling. I applied for the position of Public Relations Assistant at Resthaven Head Office, and was thrilled to be accepted to the role.
My position gives me the opportunity to use my media and communication skills in an environment where I feel I am really making positive and tangible contribution to the community.
My role involves a diverse range of tasks, including producing media items, newsletters, reports, photographs, brochures, and various other publicity material. I have also been given regular opportunities to improve my skills with formal training.
I love working for Resthaven, and I hope to continue working here for many years to come.
Tom - Residential Accountant
I started working at Resthaven in December 2008 as an Accountant for our Residential Care Services. I graduated from a Bachelor of Commerce in 2004, while working part-time at an Accounting Firm.
After graduation I spent six-months travelling to various parts of the world and upon my return to Australia, accepted a position managing the accounts payable division for a national IT business. Prior to commencing at Resthaven I was working as the Accountant at a manufacturing company in the Wine Industry.
Having already gained accounting experience in a variety of industries, Resthaven offers me new challenges and new objectives, opportunities and rewards, particularly being a not-for-profit, aged care facility. Serving an organisation which provides essential services for the greater community gives me a greater sense of pride and job satisfaction. Aged care is a growing industry which provides opportunity for career development, training and further study. Working in the Head Office at Malvern is great as there are many nice shops and cafes all within walking distance.
My role at Resthaven is diverse, including reporting, purchasing analysis, budgeting, assisting management on a daily basis and analysing procedural systems in the hope to introduce improvements. Resthaven has a lot to offer, to both employees and clients.
Sandy - General Resources Aide
I started working at Resthaven Marion RCS in 1996 as a Personal Carer in the Nursing Home, after working at another aged care facility in Salisbury.
I have a clerical background after attending technical College after High School, working as a Stenographer/Secretary working for the Barrier Industrial Council in Broken Hill NSW. I applied for the position at Resthaven when travelling became too much (from Happy Valley to Salisbury). I needed to work closer to home to spend more time with my family.
I now work at Head Office at Malvern, doing clerical work, which I love. My role is diverse and busy, assisting people in most areas of Head Office, including Residential Care Services and Community Services, with a lot of variation, which gives me the bigger picture of what Resthaven is all about. I enjoy helping people, so working in this area is very satisfying. Having worked at a large site previously, I have the knowledge to do the job I do.
Resthaven is a busy, large and fast growing organisation. The changes are interesting along the way, watching and working as Resthaven grows. My intention is to assist in the timely and smooth flow of business. There is a great need for this type of care in the community as a whole and I feel I am providing a service to the people who have helped shape our lives and our country.
