Scholarships boost the future aged care workforce

Resthaven sponsors scholarships at three South Australian universities.

The aim is to encourage students to consider a future career in aged care – where the number of opportunities exceeds supply.

Two undergraduate students who were awarded Resthaven scholarships in 2019 attended the University of Adelaide Scholarship Reception in Bonython Hall on 10 October 2019.

The two recipients outlined what receiving the scholarship meant for them:

Alyssia Baker was awarded a 2019 Resthaven Undergraduate Scholarship in Nursing at the University of Adelaide. She said, ‘Thank you very much for this scholarship and I am eternally grateful for your generosity.

‘This scholarship has allowed me to focus fully on my learning without being troubled by financial worries. It has helped with travel and expenses to undertake rural placements where I learned so much more about the importance of nursing in aged care… I will always remember your generosity and continue to do my very best.’

Jennifer Lai was awarded the 2019 Resthaven Undergraduate Scholarship in Oral Health at the University of Adelaide.

She said, ‘I am so grateful for receiving this scholarship and the financial help you have given me to purchase dental instruments and textbooks required for clinical placement and knowledge.

‘I have always had an interest in the aged care sector, as I believe the elderly deserve the best attention and care in dental health. I hope to use my knowledge and skills to help improve people’s lives and would also like to travel and help those in developing countries.

‘I would like to thank Resthaven for choosing me as the recipient of this scholarship and for the significant difference this has make to made to my life.’

Resthaven is pleased that Alyssia and Jennifer, along with many others, have benefited from their scholarships. Resthaven’s Training and Research in Aged Care framework supports students to promote careers in aged care and the future workforce.

Applications for 2020 are now open, and close on 28 February at 5pm.
