Resthaven acknowledges that the continued provision of quality service to residents and clients is underpinned by appropriately trained and skilled staff.

Provision of staff development opportunities increases skills and knowledge, improves levels of efficiency, confidence and morale and promotes provision of best practice standards of service to our clients. Resthaven also acknowledges the value of staff development in achieving best practice in Work Health and Safety and in the preparation of employees and volunteers in undertaking work practices and tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

All staff development conducted is in alignment with Resthaven’s organisational goals and strategies and training is presented within a competency based framework.

Resthaven works in collaboration with training organisations, other aged care providers, Flinders Medical Centre and the Royal Adelaide Hospital Development Units and the Repatriation General Hospital in developing aged care modules for programs for those wishing to consider a career in aged care.

Resthaven is an Authorised Provider of Endorsed Courses (APEC), subsequently our educational activities attract Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA) CNE points. More information here.

Career Progression
Many existing staff take the opportunity for career progression within the organisation. Support is offered to staff who wish to move forward in their chosen field.

Chefs in the kitchen.Examples:

Tertiary Students undertaking placement opportunities at Resthaven may be considered for assistant opportunities (for example, physiotherapy assistants, occupational therapy assistants, podiatry assistants, speech pathology assistants, lifestyle assistants etc). This in turn may subsequently lead to employment in their profession when studies are complete.

Home Support Workers and Program Assistants working in community services may choose to progress to Community Coordinators. With further study, management positions may become a possibility.

Housekeeping Services staff may progress to Assistant Cook, Cook to Coordinator Housekeeping Services. Apprentice Cook opportunities may be available from time to time.

Nursing opportunities: Personal Care Assistants may choose to undertake further study for career progression to Lifestyle Assistant  then Coordinators, or alternatively undertake Enrolled Nursing studies. Enrolled Nurses may choose to continue on to become Registered Nurses.

Resthaven offers nurses a positive experience of aged care knowledge and skills to competently undertake a role as a leader in an aged care setting. This may be in a residential care facility or in a community service program such as Extended Aged Care at Home.

Graduates and those wishing to re-enter the nursing profession are highly regarded and are supported throughout their induction period. New RNs are initially employed on a supernumerary basis whilst being mentored in their new role.

Supported Educational Package: Transition to Aged Care Learning Program. Resthaven has developed a competency based educational package for Registered Nurses (RN) who are novices or new to the specialty area of aged care. The package covers a variety of subjects and is based on a Graduate Nurse Program structure. The package is completed over three months with a supervisor/mentor (generally the site Manager or Care Coordinator).
