Mr Palmer celebrates anniversary with CFS

November 2021 marked an important date for Resthaven Riverland Community Services client, Mr Jo Palmer, who celebrated his 15 years of voluntary service with the Athelstone South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS).

While Jo celebrates his milestone anniversary with the CFS, the branch also celebrates an important milestone, their 60th anniversary.

Almost 60 CFS members, and their families, gathered at St Ignatius College for the joint celebration on Saturday 6 November.

‘A lot of us received medals for our various years of service, and I was pleased to receive my 15-year medal!’ says Mr Palmer.

‘They made it a special event, there was even a cake in the form of a fire truck – it was impressive!’

Whilst Jo celebrated 15 years with Athelstone, he has been volunteering with the CFS since 1975.

‘It has always important for me to give back to the community, and to protect the safety of the district. My family have been involved as well over the years – my wife and two boys are passionate volunteers,’ he says.

‘It teaches you the right values, which was important raising kids.’

When asked about a special memory from his 15 years of service, Jo shares, ‘There’s this photo of me in the 70’s driving a fire truck. You can see my daughter riding in the back with the other kids from the community – that was a special memory for everyone.’

‘I was gifted with that same, framed photo at the presentation!’

‘The CFS has become a big part of my family, and I am sure it will be for generations.’

Thank you for sharing your special milestone, Mr Palmer.
