Diane brings her vast skills and experience to volunteering

When Resthaven Northern Community Services began increasing their number of bus outings last year, due to their popularity, Diane Davies put up her hand to help with the organisation and logistics.

As a client herself, Diane had heard about the trips, and with her background in community development she knew this was something she could support.

In her working life, Diane managed a Community Centre in South Australia for 15 years, as well as managing a welfare agency supporting disadvantaged people in the community.

‘It is great to put my skills to good use, rather than let sit idle,’ Diane says. ‘I think, if you can still contribute and improve someone else’s life, then it’s worth sharing your skills.’

Knowing Diane, Community Services Coordinator Andrea Hanson put her in touch with Resthaven Volunteer Services so she could become a volunteer. Andrea and Diane enjoy working together, planning the bus outings for clients.

Popular destinations this year, have included the St Kilda Tram Museum and lunch at St Kilda Hotel, a trip to the Adelaide Hills, taking in Beerenberg Family Farm and Melba’s Chocolate factory, as well as a trip to the Lyndoch Lavender farm.

‘The work I was doing was similar and I have been able to draw on my experience’ Diane says. ‘It has been good to learn about working with older people. The participants really appreciate these outings. They have developed friendships along the way, and you can really see the positive impact – you can’t measure that.’

Diane recommends people volunteer and share their skills and experience.

‘If you’re looking for more fulfillment and purpose, just put your hand up,’ Diane says. ‘I find it so rewarding. I’m treated as an equal and I feel like I am a part of the team.’

Andrea Hanson, Resthaven Northern Community Services Coordinator, values Diane’s help.

‘I have been very lucky to work with Diane, who has helped with planning, booking venues and talking with clients,’ Andrea says. ‘I am very grateful for Diane’s, support, experience and knowledge, resulting in more bus excursions for clients.’

Resthaven welcomes more people to volunteer and to share interests, skills and experience. If you or someone you know would like to connect through volunteering, we would like to hear from you.
