Resthaven’s $30 million residential aged care home at 100 Hub Drive, Aberfoyle Park is now open.

A feature installed at the entrance is a sculpture, titled ‘Hikers’, by Adelaide artist, Gerry McMahon.

Resthaven Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hearn, said ‘We are excited about opening the new Resthaven Aberfoyle Park on Monday 16 July, and welcoming people through the entrance is this wonderful new sculpture.’

‘The installation of the metal sculpture, ‘Hikers’, in the front garden is one of several works by Gerry that Resthaven has commissioned. We find Gerry’s work very engaging.’

‘We held a very successful public open day on Thursday 12 July,  so that the local community could visit and see what is on offer for the 100 future residents of the aged care home.’

‘More than 500 visitors came to have a look inside, as many had been watching the construction with interest over the past 18 months.’

‘Another feature of the site is the artwork by local artists and photographers on view in communal areas throughout the home.’

Gerry says, ‘When designing my sculptures, I think of it as a three-dimensional snapshot in time. I try to capture a moment in order to tell a story. I create positive, engaging and uplifting works that communicate to their audience and enrich their environment.’

‘This sculpture shows a grandmother, energetic with a zest for life, hiking with her grandchild; both looking at each other, a connection, an unsaid bond between the young and old.’

‘In the right hand of the grandmother is a camera—symbolising memory and nostalgia; and in the left hand of the child is a compass—a metaphor for direction and future. Together they are making their way. Wisdom walking with the future.
