From Finance to Aged Care – Julian’s career story.
Encore Career with Heart
After 25 years in the finance industry, Julian Sporne (Assistant Manager, Resthaven Community Respite Services), needed a change of focus from dollars to people.
‘In 2014, I had a complete change of career and became a Home Support Worker with Resthaven,’ says Julian.
‘It was a huge culture shift for me to work in the aged care sector, but I am so pleased I made the move.’
‘It is a privilege to work together with older people. Whether my client is a doctor, politician, housewife, or just the guy or lady down the street, I love hearing their life stories.’
‘As a Home Support Worker, I supported clients in achieving their personal goals, and assisted them in maintaining their independence.’
‘I would go to people’s homes and help them with their personal care, showering, grooming, house cleaning, laundry, washing dishes or preparing a meal.’
‘Other times, I would provide them with social support through groups, or through day and overnight programs at one of our cottages.’
‘Then, in 2017, I applied for the position of Assistant Manager at Resthaven Community Respite Services, and realised that I had found my perfect job!’
‘In this role, I have a really good mix between helping people and working on the administrative side of things.’
‘I work with some amazingly creative people, who have a real passion for working with older people, and who resonate as a team.’
‘I still work together with clients most days, and I love talking to them and supporting them in achieving their goals. However, I also spend time planning and organising, which I am passionate about.’
‘Working in aged care has exceeded my expectations in so many ways, and is beyond what I thought the role would involve and how it would make me feel.’
‘I have worked for some great businesses and organisations in the past, but within Resthaven, I have witnessed some inspirational leadership and the utmost professionalism.’
‘Resthaven is committed to developing me as a person, and has a strong leadership program that supports me in achieving my goals.’
‘In addition to my Certificate III in Aged Care, I have completed short courses through Dementia Training Australia and the University of Tasmania, and even spent time volunteering in the palliative care area of a hospital in Kenya.’
‘I am considering studying the Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management with assistance through Resthaven’s Professional Development Fund.’
‘Working in aged care isn’t for everybody, but if you have compassion for others, have an understanding of how important it is to respect a person’s individuality, and are looking for a rewarding career, I encourage you to consider making the move. You won’t regret it!’
Celebrating 85 years in 2020, Resthaven Incorporated is a not for profit, South Australian aged care community service associated with the Uniting Church.
