Caring for those living with Parkinson’s
Resthaven Clinical Nurse Workforce Development, Julie Tansing, reminds us to be aware that people living with Parkinson’s disease are especially at risk in the current climate.
‘People living with Parkinson’s must continue to exercise and have some engagement with others in order to effectively manage their symptoms,’ says Julie.
‘Exercise of some type, and staying engaged with friends and family by phone, is essential.’
‘Some suggestions include a walk around the home garden, dancing to music, some yoga or Tai Chi.’
‘Don’t forget the benefits of music and singing! Your body will benefit, and it soothes the soul and brightens up the day.’
‘I encourage all those Resthaven clients living with Parkinson’s to reach out to their Resthaven key contact person if you need any extra advice or support.’
‘I also recommend contacting Parkinson’s SA, who provide excellent support and education services for people with Parkinson’s or other movement disorders.’
‘And please, keep in touch with family and friends via phone or online tools such as Skype or Zoom.’
Resthaven supports many people living with Parkinson’s across Resthaven Community Services.
‘Many group programs are now being adapted to run online or on an in-home basis – please speak with your Resthaven key contact person to find out if this service is available in your area.’
