Men on the Move social group’s unexpected win at the goalpost

Resthaven Marion Community Services‘ social group for older men, Men on the Move, recently enjoyed an unexpected day out — certainly one for the history books!

For History Month, Coordinator, Monika Lyckholm, planned a visit for the group to the Port Adelaide Football Club Museum, located at The Precinct, Alberton Oval.

Monika explains, ‘As it turned out, there were NO Port Adelaide supporters amongst the men in the group!’

‘I thought, what a disaster…but the group were enthusiastic about making the visit.’

‘Home Support Workers, Alyson, Amie and Jack, led the charge, with Alyson swiftly supplying clients with Adelaide Crows scarves and hats—showing their team pride to the opposition.’

‘There we all were, dressed in our Crow’s gear, and headed towards uncharted territory!’

‘Clients shared nervous laughter on the way. For morale, they commented, “walk tall and be proud,” and “gotta check out the opposition”.’

The Men on the Move were greeted by museum curator, Margie, and the group wandered through the museum, taking in the rich history of one of the oldest football clubs in Adelaide.

‘They had displays of every premiership team, a showcase of the club’s history, trophies, and memorabilia.’

‘We headed upstairs for our lunch, and were greeted with welcomes and smiles, despite wearing red, gold and blue!’

‘The CEO of the Port Adelaide Football Club popped in to say “hello” and sat with the group for a while.’

‘One group member said, “We must be special to have the CEO come see us”.’

‘Footy banter continued throughout our lunch as Port supporters walked past. It’s great to see two local teams come together, despite the competition.’

‘On our way back, clients were beaming with laughter and pride, and couldn’t stop talking about their unique experience.’

What an unexpected win at the goalpost!
