‘My Home Life’ graduates share their stories

My Home Life is certainly not a typical leadership program,’ says Resthaven Port Elliot Care Coordinator, Susan Biffin.

Indeed, with a focus on appreciation, positive relationships, open conversation, and observation, My Home Life (MHL) graduates are bringing a range of new skills to their professional relationships, with great benefit to their colleagues, as well as the older people whom Resthaven supports.

CEO, Richard Hearn, says, ‘My Home Life (MHL) is an international, evidence-based, award-winning leadership support program, brought to Australia through the SA Innovation Hub, of which I am Chair.’

‘It is specifically designed for aged care, and is a proven program designed to release the qualities that leaders need to adapt, build trust, and inspire those with whom they work, to achieve their organisation’s goals.’

‘Many Resthaven staff have now successfully graduated from the MHL program, with very positive outcomes across the board.’

Susan, who graduated from MHL in May 2018, says, ‘The most outstanding aspect for me is the way MHL promotes self-reflection, and comes from a very positive outlook.’

‘It taught me to appreciate what l have in my life, as well as to focus on the ways in which l can improve my communication and relationship with others.’

‘MHL emphasises a positive and motivating approach, which focuses on your strengths; it promotes what we are doing well and encourages us to do more of what is already successful.’

Fellow graduate, Resthaven Mitcham Care Coordinator, Jessica Margrate, echoes these sentiments, saying, ‘What really struck me was that by making small changes to your own practice and communication, it really can have a big impact on the broader workplace – and ultimately, the care provided.’

‘I am so grateful to have been a part of My Home Life, and look forward to utilising these concepts, and developing myself as a leader and manager in the future.’

‘Thank you to Resthaven for giving me this opportunity, and supporting me through this program.’

Susan is also looking to the future with optimism, saying, ‘I appreciate the opportunity that was provided to me by Resthaven. Thanks to MHL, l believe l have the ability to make a difference.’

Resthaven offers a comprehensive range of workforce development programs for staff. In addition, a professional development fund is available to support some staff to undertake further education.

As Richard says, ‘A skilled and competent workforce is imperative in being able to deliver high quality aged care and support.’
