    Spiritual wellbeing

These days, Chaplains are frequently referred to as “Spiritual Care Practitioners”, working in partnership to provide holistic care which promotes physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing.

Spiritual wellbeing is the most difficult to define, but has to do with being at peace with ourselves and our circumstances.

Spiritual health is promoted by loving relationships and positive beliefs and values, and helps us to be resilient, hopeful and joyful – especially during times of difficulty and change.

A friend recently described to me how, throughout his working life, he had been highly successful and ambitious, and that retirement had triggered an identity crisis: “Who am I now, and what can I do with my life that is meaningful and productive?”.

As we worked together over several months, he gradually experienced a surge of joy and contentment as he explored his inner life. Possessions became less important, and relationships more important.

People started noticing that he was happier, more peaceful, less stressed. Even as his physical wellbeing declined, his spiritual health began to thrive.

I am thankful that Resthaven recognises the importance of spiritual wellbeing, and employs Chaplains as spiritual care practitioners.
