Nurse Leadership Capability Program
Resthaven is creating leadership pathways for nurses with leadership development programs.
‘Resthaven’s carefully selected workforce of more than 2,200 staff participate in on-going training and education, throughout their employment with us,’ says Wendy Morey, Executive Manager Workforce Development and Governance.
‘This is an important element in offering quality services for residents and clients.’
‘The majority of this education and training is offered through our Workforce Development team. We offer a broad professional development program with on-line, on-site and blended learning opportunities.’
‘Staying up-to-date can lead to internal opportunities for advancement and fulfilling career paths for people who are rewarded by working with older people.’
‘In the current Resthaven ‘Nurse Leadership Development Program’, ten nurses who work in various coordinator–focussed roles across Resthaven’s services, are working towards a nationally recognised leadership skill set.’
‘One is Kathleen Goodridge, who is participating in the program to bolster her leadership capability, as she was recently promoted to the position of Care Coordinator at Resthaven Paradise.’
‘Kathleen has worked in aged care for the past 18 years, initially starting as a Personal Care Worker. She continued to study, and commenced at Resthaven 13 years ago as an enrolled nurse’, says Belle Kerr, Manager Resthaven Paradise.
‘Through her persistence and dedication to further education, Kathleen has continued on in her career path, completing her Registered Nurse qualification, becoming a Clinical Nurse and now succeeding in gaining a high level leadership role at Resthaven as Care Coordinator.’
‘I believe this Nurse Leadership Development Program will assist Kathleen to gain the confidence, assertiveness and advanced communication skills needed to excel as a team leader.’
Kathleen says, ‘I am excited to be given the opportunity to participate in the Leadership Development Program. It is not only an opportunity to learn leadership skills, but also an opportunity to network with colleagues from across the organisation.’
‘Resthaven encourages internal promotion and retaining the experience of long serving staff members, as their knowledge and organisational memory is invaluable’, says Wendy Morey.
‘Contributing to professional development is just one way we recognise their dedication and give them assistance to further succeed and excel in their roles.’
‘The “Nurse Leadership Development Program” is the third such leadership program in the past 18 months. The program has been specifically tailored by Resthaven’s Workforce Development team, in conjunction with senior residential and community managers with developing leadership at our sites first and foremost in mind.’
‘At the end of the program, participants will have a nationally recognised vocational education qualification, which can count towards further vocational training in leadership and management.’
