Time to pause, rest and reflect
This Easter is an ideal time to pause, rest and reflect. In our diverse society, Easter has particular significance for Christians.
On 25 April, we commemorate ANZAC Day, another time of great significance when we recognise and respect our veterans for their service and sacrifice.
We remember the contributions they have made in building our Australian community – both in services and as workers, friends and volunteers, and most importantly, in establishing and being part of a family; of lives well lived.
I also encourage you to pause and give particular acknowledgement to the contributions made by older members of our community. If this includes you, reflect proudly on all that you have achieved throughout your life and continue to do so. For many, this includes choosing to live in Australia, having been born overseas; we have benefitted from the rich heritage they bring to our community.
How do we see our major political parties acknowledging the needs of frail older individuals who come to a point in time where they need very specific support? Most had hoped the community they helped build would assist them at their time of need.
What does it mean from the point of view of the Federal election? At the time of writing, there have been no announcements that gave significance to the particular needs of older individuals and those who rely on services to sustain their quality of life.
Where are the election commitments to resolve the huge waiting list of some 126,000 individuals assessed as being in need of a Home Care Package that they are not receiving?
Where are the commitments to ensure that from 1 July this year more resources are provided to residential aged care services to meet the community expectations regarding aged care service quality and availability?
There is no doubt the aged care service system has been evolving to improve quality and meet the needs of individuals. However, there is now clearly an identified, immediate need to respond with greater urgency to offer support and show respect and dignity to older Australians as truly is their right.
Let your local candidates know that supporting frail individuals is extremely important to you and your vote.
In celebrating this Easter Monday in all that it means for community, family and our beliefs, please include your loved elders and consider them in your deliberations regarding this Federal election. Make your voice heard and your vote count.
