Puppy comforts with cuddles at Marion Community Services

    ‘Huxley the Helper’

18 month old puppy, ‘Huxley’, is bringing his own special kind of therapy to clients at Resthaven Marion Community Services.

Manager, Deb McDonald, says, ‘It would be fair to say that Huxley, a Poodle/Labrador/King Charles Spaniel cross, is immediately loved by all who meet him.’

‘He is a sweet, gentle dog, who enjoys chasing the ball, eating his squeaky toys, finding treats, and keeping everyone company.’

Huxley’s mum was rescued from a puppy farm just three days before he was born. Huxley went into foster care, and was adopted at 10 weeks old by the Vines family.

Deb says, ‘Luckily for us, their daughter, Lucy, is an Occupational Therapist at Resthaven Marion Community Services, and brought Hux to work one day to meet us.’

‘We knew there was something special about Hux as soon as he came in. His tails wags and he smiles, but he never jumps.’

‘He leans lightly against people, and if they respond, they get the best ever cuddles. If people don’t respond, he just moves on to the next friendly face.’

‘Huxley’s gentle ways have made their mark with clients and staff alike.’

There is a great deal written about the benefits of companion and therapy dogs; researchers and experts agree that pets excel as therapeutic agents, and that dogs are an antidote to depression.

Deb says, ‘Huxley brings joy and laughter, and takes people’s minds off of their personal problems, aches, pains and worries.’

‘We are all very grateful to the Vines family for sharing Huxley with us.’
