From 9-13 May, we celebrate National Volunteers Week.

Volunteers are integral to the fabric of Resthaven’s community.

Just one volunteer who is making a real difference to the lives of residents and clients is Marianne Newbery, who facilitates the ‘reminiscence’ group at Resthaven Paradise.

Marianne, who worked at Resthaven Paradise and Eastern Community Services for 25 years before becoming a volunteer, says, ‘I always enjoyed working with clients on reminiscing, so, when I retired last year, I thought to volunteer on this same subject at Resthaven Paradise.’

‘Many residents have memories of their grandparents, as, in those days, grandparents often lived with family all under the one roof, and were cared for by their parents. This meant that three generations were living together – a very rare thing today.’

‘As children, they remember having chickens, which would keep them in good supply of eggs, and many fruit trees. One lady recalled fond memories of climbing the fig tree in her backyard.’

‘Most residents walked to school, and remember that the classrooms would have fifty students in a class.’
‘There are also memories of the boys who loved dipping the girls’ plaits in the ink wells!’

On 4 May, Resthaven volunteers such as Marianne celebrated the power of volunteers with a ‘Thank You’ High Tea, held at 2.00pm at Resthaven Paradise.

‘Each year, Resthaven celebrates the work of around 500 volunteers throughout May with these events,’ says Stacey Thompson, Resthaven Manager, Volunteer Services.

‘This year’s theme is Viva Volunteers!’

‘Volunteers increase our flexibility, expertise, energy and social connections. Resthaven’s community wouldn’t be the same without the power of volunteers,’ Stacey explains.

Volunteering has been at the heart of Resthaven since it was established in 1935.
