Resthaven Award celebrates medical excellence in Palliative Care

On Friday 7 May 2021, the University of Adelaide MBBS Declaration Ceremony was held in Bonython Hall.

The ceremony recognises the special achievements of medical students and staff and includes the recitation of the World Medical Association’s Declaration of Geneva, which affirms the principles governing their future practice.

This special occasion for the graduating class of 2020 provided an opportunity to celebrate the completion of their undergraduate medical studies alongside family and friends.

Resthaven confers a Palliative Care Medicine Prize to a medical graduate who has shown outstanding excellence and passion in the field of palliative care. This year, two deserving recipients, Portia Joyce-Tubb and Adina Laforgia, were presented their awards at the ceremony by Resthaven Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, Peter Jenkin.

Peter says, ‘This award is certainly close to my heart. As someone who has specialised in palliative care for over twenty years, I fully support anything that encourages an early interest in the field.’

‘Palliative Care is everyone’s business. It’s important to encourage students to understand how important palliative care is. Not only as a specialist field, but also the role all doctors can play regardless of whether they eventually become surgeons, physicians, GPs or in an emergency department.’

‘The awards presentation is timely, as National Palliative Care Week is approaching, from 23 May – 29 May. I take this opportunity to congratulate both Portia and Adina on their prestigious awards.’

Resthaven also funds a number of scholarships at the three major South Australian Universities to encourage the future workforce to consider a career in aged care, including:
