    Resthaven receives vision support funding

Resthaven has received funding to expand a range of Commonwealth Home Support Program aged care services.

Included in this was funding for a new service type for Resthaven: ‘Specialised Support Services—Vision Support’. A gap was identified in this area following an internal research project.

The funds are to be spent in providing vision support services in the metropolitan area, the Fleurieu, Riverland, Murraylands, Limestone Coast and the Adelaide Hills.

‘The specialised vision support services will be tailored for each individual to manage their vision loss, maximise their independence and support them to remain living at home,’ says Sue McKechnie, Executive Manager, Community Services.

‘The model for this new service is Occupational Therapy–driven, and will combine a mix of direct service delivery, tailored support, and expert advice.’

‘Support will include assistance with tasks around the home that the person is unable to do due to their vision loss, assisting people to connect with their community and friends, falls and balance classes, using assistive technologies, information sessions on vision loss, and assessment of home safety’.

‘Staff will be trained by the Royal Society for the Blind to better understand the needs of people with vision loss, and ways to provide support to facilitate the person’s independence.’
