Rob connects Resthaven residents
Having a conversation and sharing stories with the residents at Resthaven Westbourne Park is something that volunteer Rob Mutton enjoys very much.
‘It’s wonderful to get to know each person and learn about their life. If we share a laugh and a smile, then even better,’ Rob says.
‘I am doing my little bit and helping combat loneliness’.
Monash University research longitudinal data shows that one in five older Australians experience loneliness, especially those aged 75 years and over. Evaluation lead and Monash University technology and ageing sociologist Dr Barbara Barbosa Neves says, ‘We know that socialising helps our health, wellbeing and quality of life’.
Rob’s engagement with residents has helped to create some of these opportunities, by bringing people together in a positive environment. Since joining Resthaven, Rob has led the Men’s Group at Resthaven Westbourne Park and facilitated many conversations and storytelling amongst the participants, often sharing fascinating exploits and adventures.
Lifestyle Coordinator Rachael Ross has really appreciated Rob’s role in connecting some of the men with each other. Often, they need an extra nudge to get them talking and sharing.
Whilst the Men’s Group is having a hiatus, Rob is enjoying visiting individual residents.
‘We talk about anything that comes up,’ Rob says.
Rob also helps by cooking the barbecue for special events and has been known to get on the tools for Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) too (pictured above).
‘It is good to know that I am also helping staff and providing that extra social support by offering a listening ear to residents.’
Rob encourages others to take up volunteering with Resthaven and to do their bit in helping to alleviate loneliness.
‘I’ve managed to encourage my brother-in-law to get involved too,’ Rob says. ‘We both have teaching backgrounds and enjoy getting to know people.’
‘It doesn’t take much to make such a difference.’
Resthaven welcomes more people to volunteer and to share interests, skills and experience. If you or someone you know would like to connect through volunteering, we would like to hear from you.
