The power of reflection and rejuvenation – Resthaven chaplain advocates taking a break

Nina Corlett, one of Resthaven’s Coordinating Chaplains, has recently returned from the trip of a lifetime – taking The Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide.

During her journey, she enjoyed some well-earned downtime and advocates that everyone takes these moments to find rejuvenation and renewed energy. She says:

Katherine Gorge‘I’ve recently returned from an amazing trip on the Ghan – the trip of a lifetime – and I have decided that rail is an awesome way to travel. The rocking and rolling of the train was so relaxing, and the routine of wandering down to enjoy a drink in the lounge carriage before being called for dinner felt very decadent and sophisticated. It was all very civilised and felt a lot like pampering (all that was missing was the masseuse😊).

Leading up to my trip, life had been quite chaotic. In fact, I was so in need of a break that everything was piling up and I felt as though I might not make it! I’m sure you can relate. Holidays always seem to bring an ‘entrée’ of extra hours and cramming work in.

But, the break was so important and had been a long time in the planning. And it didn’t disappoint.

On my first day in Darwin, I visited a gallery. There I fell in love with a beautifully colourful piece of Indigenous Australian art. It was called ‘Bush Healing’ and was painted by an artist two women. on e holdin aboriginal Australian paintingcalled Louise. I bought it – as you do when you are on holidays and have the time and space for the body and the mind to recharge. I even took a photo with the painting and Louise.

This is a reminder to all how important it is to take breaks from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I am living proof. I have returned re-energised.

It is this final point that is important. In my experience, this is one of the wisdoms that age brings. There is a recognition that life goes by quickly. Suddenly the kids have grown up, moved out, and you find yourself at a different stage in life. In addition, there is a recognition that life is not about racing to the finish line. It is about the moments in between – choosing someone to share life with, watching first steps, hearing first words, working the land, driving the trucks, baking for family events, drying the tears after first loves fade, buying first homes, retirement, travelling with a companion. Life is to be lived – and taking time to recharge is central to caring for ourselves so we can be present in the moments that are important.
