Respite and Support for Carers

Resthaven supports carers of older people to have a planned rest or break (respite) from their caring role, and to maintain their own physical and emotional health.

Respite support is flexible and can be provided in the person’s own home, in group settings, or in community settings (including overnight respite care for up to four nights at a time).

In addition, our residential care facilities provide respite care in a residential care setting.

Resthaven offers planned and emergency respite options to carers of frail older people across metropolitan Adelaide, in the Adelaide Hills, Murray Bridge, Mannum, Limestone Coast and Riverland areas.

For general information, please download Resthaven's Respite Services Brochure. (PDF 450KB)

In-Home Respite

Respite care is provided by trained Home Support Workers in the home of the person being cared for, enabling the Carer to have a break.

Our trained staff understand the needs of people who are frail, have a disability, or who have problems associated with memory loss or confusion.

Home Support Workers assist the person being cared for with leisure activities, personal care and routine aspects of daily living, negotiated according to their needs and preferences.

Resthaven provides in-home respite in eastern, western, northern and southern metropolitan Adelaide, Adelaide Hills, Murray Bridge and Mallee, and the Limestone Coast, and Riverland areas.

Group Respite

Ridgway House Group RespiteRespite for a carer may be best met by involving the person they care for in group programs. Groups are conducted at various venues and times. Individual needs are considered and activities are structured according to the abilities and interests of those attending.

Respite Clubs: Group respite is offered for groups of approximately 8 -14 people at a time who respond well in a social environment. They may have moderate memory loss problems or other needs. Respite staff are supported by volunteers. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are generally provided (southern and eastern metropolitan Adelaide).

Small Group Respite: Some people are more suited to smaller groups. A Home Support Worker and a volunteer conduct small respite groups for up to 4 people.

These groups are developed according to individual interests and may include centre-based activities, outings or respite held in a participant’s own home.
