• Voluntary Assisted Dying: Information and Support

Supporting your choices at end of life

At Resthaven, we respect the rights of older people to make informed choices about their care, including at the end of life.

We are committed to supporting the dignity, wellbeing, and individual preferences of every person in our care. This includes providing compassionate and informed responses to residents and clients who may wish to explore the option of voluntary assisted dying (VAD).

    Our Approach

Resthaven supports the rights of older people to make informed choices about their care, including end-of-life decisions made under the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2021 (SA).

Resthaven provides full support for all aspects of the voluntary assisted dying (VAD) pathway. This means that residents and clients who choose to access VAD are supported throughout the process, and all steps of the pathway may occur within Resthaven’s residential aged care homes or community services settings.

Our role is to ensure that every person feels safe, respected, and supported — whatever their decision. Resthaven’s team works sensitively with residents, clients, families, and health practitioners to ensure the process is carried out in accordance with the legislation and the individual’s wishes.

Alongside this, Resthaven provides comprehensive access to high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. Our award-winning specialist palliative care nursing team offers expert guidance and support, reflecting each person’s clinical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs.

    What is Voluntary Assisted Dying?

VAD enables an eligible person with a terminal illness, or medical condition, the option to take a prescribed medication that will bring about their death at a time of their choosing.

To access VAD, a person must meet all eligibility criteria and follow the process outlined in the legislation. A person’s decision to request VAD must be:

    • Voluntary: made by the person themselves, free from pressure or influence
    • Enduring: made through a series of formal requests
    • Fully informed: based on a clear understanding of their diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and palliative care options

For detailed information about eligibility, the process, and support services, visit the SA Health website: Voluntary Assisted Dying in South Australia.
