Multicultural Services

Resthaven values the diversity of the Australian society. All Resthaven services support people from diverse backgrounds.

In our commitment to provision of quality aged care, we recognise that older people from diverse backgrounds have a right to receive culturally appropriate and sensitive services. We do this through:

Cultural Awareness Training
Resthaven Staff have access to regular training in cultural awareness, tailored to their professional needs.

Culturally specific programs

  • Resthaven Paradise and Eastern Community Services offers Community Aged Care Packages specifically for Italian clients.

  • Resthaven’s Community Aged Care Packages in the Western Metropolitan area prioritise CALD clients.

  • Day Respite Service prioritises Italian speaking clients at the Regency Cottage in Croydon Park. Expanded services will provide in-home respite for carers in the western suburbs.

  • Also at Regency Cottage, a Social Club offers a weekly program specifically for Italian or CALD clients.

  • Resthaven’s Community Respite Services in the southern metropolitan area hold a weekly social group for Italian men offering a program of culturally appropriate activities and outings. This service is also expanding due to additional funding.

  • The Greek, Italian and Vietnamese seniors in Virginia have access to a range of allied health services offered by Resthaven’s professionals at the Playford Council day programs.

  • Resthaven Murray Bridge and Hills Community Services offers Community Aged Care Packages specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients

Special Projects

  • Serbian
Resthaven is currently involved with the Serbian community in metropolitan Adelaide in a Community Partners Program project, funded by the Department of Health and Ageing. This project aims to familiarise older Serbian people with the range of aged care supports and services, particularly those existing in the community that can assist people to remain independent. Resthaven Project Staff has been working with key Serbian community groups and has facilitated a number of expos, workshops, radio and newspaper promotions. To view Serbian language aged care resources please click here.

  • German
Resthaven’s research project into the needs of German speaking older people demonstrated the need for culturally appropriate information about aged care. As a result, an English-German directory of aged care services was developed outlining a range of aged care support services. To view this directory, please visit our Publications page.

  • Culturally Appropriate Palliative Care
Resthaven's Palliative Care Project puts particular emphasis on working with aged care workers from CALD communities and supporting them in understanding Advance Directives and producing culturally relevant resources.

  • Aboriginal Community
Resthaven has a partnership arrangement with Aboriginal Home Care to deliver services to members of the Aboriginal community; this includes in-home services in the northern metro area and group activities in the northern and western metro areas. Resthaven Northern Community Services has developed an innovative health and lifestyle program for Aboriginal clients. The program combines individual and group interventions focusing on healthy lifestyle, exercise, and nutrition to help with chronic illness management.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
Resthaven Murray Bridge developed a number of flexible and innovative strategies to deliver Community Aged Care Packages to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in a highly responsive and culturally appropriate manner. To view this brochure, please visit our Publications page.

  • Chinese
Resthaven has been working with the Chinese Welfare Services to increase awareness and understanding of aged care issues among the Chinese community. Chinese seniors groups have visited various Resthaven residential facilities, and Chinese cultural presentations have been held for the residents at Resthaven. In conjunction with other aged care providers, as a part of the Chinese Community Ageing Network, Resthaven continues to consult on aged care related issues. Download Resthaven information in Chinese.

Community Development
Resthaven employs Multicultural Project Officers who work with ethnic organisations and communities in order to understand and respond to the needs of clients and staff from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Regular tours are organised for CALD community groups to come and view Resthaven facilities, meet staff and residents and find out about what we do.
