Chiton has it all for resident Wendy

It was love at first sight when Wendy and Paul Jennings first visited Resthaven’s seven-star eco-friendly Chiton Retirement Living, situated between Port Elliot and Victor Harbor.

The couple had long lived in the country but were seeking a smaller property that offered both individual privacy and a sense of connection.

‘We wanted an “easy-to-look-after” house that would capture the winter sun, avoid summer heat, with solar energy on the roof, solar hot water, and double glazing — and this had it all,’ Wendy says.

The modern, architecturally designed homes all have rainwater tanks, garages and energy-saving design features. The village itself has an area where residents can park their caravans, and the community Lakehouse, with bar area and kitchen, library, hall, gym, lounge areas, and a deck that opens out onto views of the local wetland, is a resident favourite.

‘’We all live our individual lives and have our individual spaces, but the Lakehouse is like everybody’s extra living room, dining room, and kitchen,’ Wendy says. ‘We can come down here and share the space equally.’

Beyond the houses themselves, the location provides abundant access to nature and recreational opportunities.

‘We’re not enclosed, so we can get really close to nature,’ Wendy says. ‘It’s lovely — we have open air, birds, and other wildlife around us. I have an electric-assist bike, and there are plenty of bike trails, which makes getting around excellent.’

Wendy says the move could not have been more successful.

‘We used to walk every weekday morning and talk with our neighbours about what we’d like to do when we couldn’t manage our big properties,’ Wendy says. ‘Having an ecological house with a community around us was exactly what we were looking for.’

Additional units at Chiton Retirement Living have recently been built, and these new homes are now selling.
