Retirement living is ‘magic’, according to Janet
Mrs Janet Paull of the Resthaven Bellevue Heights Independent Retirement Living village ‘couldn’t be happier’ in her two-bedroom unit overlooking Sturt Gorge.
Before moving to the village at 47 Eve Road, Bellevue Heights, Janet, whose husband passed away several years ago, was living in ‘this big house, all on my own’.
‘I was paying for all these people to maintain a big house, and I was the only one in it! What a waste of money!’ she says.
‘I came and talked to Jeannie [Peace, Resthaven Retirement Living Coordinator], and awhile later she called me and said, “I think I have the one for you.”’
‘My daughter and I walked in the front door and went, “Yep, it’s perfect.”’
‘The best thing about living here is, firstly, I don’t have the maintenance of a home and garden.’
‘If I need something done, it just happens, the maintenance people just come and do it.’
‘People don’t know how good it is, it’s magic! You just move in and it’s all there, it’s all done.’
‘Also, knowing I’m here at Resthaven means that I can access ongoing care if I need it [in the adjacent residential aged care home].’
‘The Resthaven Bellevue Heights village community is just lovely. I have fab neighbours on both sides, we’re so lucky.’
Janet is also a big fan of the village’s bushland setting, saying how much she loves watching ‘the kookaburras, the koalas – it’s beautiful, absolutely beautiful.’
Finally, now that Janet doesn’t have a big house to maintain, her time is freed up to enjoy the things she loves most: ‘I go to the movies with girlfriends, I go shopping or out to lunch with my daughter,’ she says.
‘I go to my local church, where I’ve volunteered in the community programs office for the last 21 years, and in the play group on Monday mornings.’
‘Living here, you just carry on with your life as it was before.’
‘It’s a great life, and I can enjoy it now that I don’t have a big house to look after.’
