    Just like popping round to a friend’s: Resthaven Naracoorte social group a hit

    At Resthaven Limestone Coast Community Services, the Naracoorte day respite and social support groups are proving to be a hit with locals.

    The social groups meet regularly at Resthaven’s office at 17 Gordon Street, Naracoorte. Clients direct the activities, and there is always time for a good chat and a relaxing hot drink.

    ‘The social group is a wonderful chance to just get out and be able to chat with the ladies around the table,’ Resthaven Limestone Coast Community Services client, Christine Carter says. ‘It’s really helped me to open up and speak freely. The friendship and care from the staff is wonderful.’

    Gloria Grace, also a Resthaven Limestone Coast Community Services client, agrees.

    ‘I’m not one to make a fuss or ask for help, but I really appreciate having Resthaven to be able to ring up when I need them,’ Gloria says. ‘I know that they are going to be there to help me.’

    After her husband, Lou, passed away, Gloria found that she needed more help around the house. Gloria receives support from Resthaven for cleaning and social visits, enabling her to remain living independently in her own home.

    ‘Just to have that little voice at the door who says “Hello, you there? You ok?” … it’s wonderful to hear that little voice,’ Gloria says. ‘I have someone who comes and picks me up and we come to the office here and we have a chat… I never feel lonely because I’ve got really lovely friends at Resthaven.’


    The Monday afternoon social group enjoys a range of activities, including craft and baking.

    Social visits into the town for coffee and cake are expected to resume in the coming months, and a new, larger space within the cottage is on the cards to accommodate more clients. The staff love welcoming new members join the group.

    Resthaven Community Services Coordinator, Tess Hallett, facilitates the group and is pleased by the connections being made.

    ‘Our office has a homely and welcoming atmosphere,’ Tess says.

    ‘It’s just like popping round to a friend’s house for a social visit.’
