Respite care: A warm welcome at Resthaven Malvern
From the moment he stepped into Resthaven Malvern, respite resident Mr John Leak says he has been blown away by the care and support he has received.
‘The care has been beyond what I expected,’ John says.
‘What I have received is hard to put into words – it’s a feeling of being welcomed and accepted. I’ve had a lot of fun – everyone here has been very good to me.’
John has been at Resthaven Malvern for eight weeks of respite care while his daughter, with whom he lives, is working interstate. He has enjoyed the activities, formed friendships with other residents and has been impressed with what he has seen.
‘One of the main things I have noticed is that the staff here work as a team,’ John says.
‘Everyone works together for the residents.’
‘There is great flexibility for individuals, and staff members are always offering activities and helping with requests. For example, the other week we had the footy playing up on the big screen in the activity hall. We barracked and shouted until we were hoarse!’
John, a former Marketing Manager of the Adelaide Oval and also a financier, says the experience has been eye-opening.
‘There were some misconceptions I had about residential care that were totally, totally wrong,’ John says. ‘And it took me less than 24 hours to realise that. I have really been spoiled here!’
John says the change in routine has been good for him.
‘One example I never would have imagined is that I’ve been eating salads for lunch!’ John says. ‘And they have been the most magnificent salads! I’ve also been enjoying soups for dinner, and because they have been so delicious, sometimes I’ll have a second serve. Everyone is very accommodating.’
Having faced some health problems in recent years, John currently receives aged care support at home.
‘I think I’ve been a bit scared of what is to come and what the future might bring,’ John says.
‘I’m still scared about the future, but I feel that if I put myself with Resthaven, I will be in good hands.’
Thank you for sharing your experience, John!
