‘Zero’ the dog visits Resthaven Marion Community Services
Recently, the Resthaven Marion Community Services Friday Club were delighted to host two very special government workers: Zero the Labrador and his human, Darren.
Manager, Deb McDonald, says, ‘Zero is not just any dog – he has a special job in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Adelaide.’
‘He is a court companion, and his job is to support children and adolescents going through the court system under mostly traumatic circumstances.’
‘Zero, who is 2½, is the first of his kind in South Australia.’
‘He started out as a guide dog, however, he was a little too eager to please, so he was trained instead as a companion dog.’
‘He has excelled ever since with his calming presence.’
‘When Zero is on duty, he wears his yellow working jacket, and is very attentive to commands, almost serious.’
‘When he first meets a child, he “bows” to them, to reassure the child that he is not a threat.’
‘However, once his “work jacket” comes off, he is just like any other dog – playful and excited.’
‘During his Friday Club visit, once Darren removed Zero’s jacket, Zero was happy to play fetch, and receive pats from everyone.’
‘The Friday Group was very appreciative to Darren and Zero for their visit, and for sharing Zero’s story.’
The Resthaven Marion Community Services Friday Club is just one of the many wellness and social groups run at the centre at 43 Finniss Street, Marion. To find out more, phone 8198 2000.
