‘Christmas in July’ at Resthaven Mount Gambier

Christmas arrived early at Resthaven Mount Gambier, with residents and staff celebrating their annual ‘Christmas in July’ event.

Acting Lifestyle Coordinator, Jess Millard, says, ‘Residents delighted in the company of others, including Resthaven Board President, Mark Porter.’

‘Everyone enjoyed a special Christmas lunch, followed with festive activities in our decorated hall.’

‘Christmas in July is held every year in conjunction with the site’s anniversary—Resthaven Mount Gambier opened in July 2011, so this year marks our 12th birthday.’

‘What better way to celebrate than with some festive cheer!’

‘Leading up to the day, residents assisted staff with decorating the home. They were busy placing baubles on the Christmas tree and crafting the table decorations and flyers.’

‘It wasn’t long before everyone tucked into their meals of roast turkey with all the trimmings, followed by some traditional Christmas pudding for dessert.’

‘Residents commented, “this is the best meal of the year”, and “what a lovely, delicious meal”.’

‘Christmas music set an enjoyable atmosphere throughout the event, with residents chatting, laughing, and sharing memories of past celebrations.’

‘Staff were also in full spirits, excited to don their most festive outfits, reading traditional Christmas jokes to the group, and serving lunch.’

‘In the afternoon, residents settled in for a Christmas movie, which was a welcome conclusion to “a lovely day”.’

Manager, Belle Kerr, says, ‘To ensure a COVID-safe event, the group adhered to social distancing requirements. To do this, we utilised the dining rooms on each floor, giving residents the option to dine in the hall, or in a dining room of their choice.’

‘It was great to receive feedback from residents who enjoyed this year’s setup, which created a “community-style event”, where they could interact with others who they may not have had the opportunity to otherwise.’

Later that evening, the annual Resthaven Staff Appreciation Dinner was held in Mount Gambier, which celebrates Resthaven’s long-serving staff across on the Limestone Coast. Resthaven Board President, Mark Porter, and CEO, Darren Birbeck, hosted the evening’s celebrations.
