• National Carer’s Week: 16-22 October

national-carers-week-2016-logoIt’s National Carers Week! Do you know someone who is a carer? Or perhaps you are a carer yourself?

With one in eight Australians providing unpaid care or support to a family member or friend*, chances are that the issue of ‘caring for carers’ affects you.

National Carers Week is our chance to recognise the outstanding contribution of Australia’s 2.8 million unpaid carers.

‘A carer can be anyone who has a role caring for someone reliant on them, including parents, partners, brothers, sisters, friends, sons or daughters,’ says Executive Manager, Community Services, Sue McKechnie.

‘Often, they do not actually think of themselves as a ‘carer’, even though they provide immensely important, regular unpaid support.’

‘People often don’t know where to get help, or what their options are.’

‘And often they don’t want to let on that they need help – it can make them feel that they are somehow failing in the care they give.’

‘Unfortunately, this is a common theme.’

‘It is very important for carers to take a break from their caring role so that they are able to stay well themselves.’

‘The good news is that Resthaven can help.’

‘Through Resthaven Community Respite Services, we provide high quality accommodation, meals and socialisation to your loved one, from just a few hours at home to up to a week in our respite cottages.’

‘Community respite options are available across the metropolitan area, the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu, Riverland and Limestone Coast, including in-home, small group and overnight respite. Residential respite is available at all of Resthaven’s aged care homes.’

‘We can assist people with the application process for government funded support and help them navigate the system. We’re here to help.’
