• Independence at Home through Restorative Care

Mr Raymond Artis of Modbury was able to remain living independently at home whilst recovering from a major health setback, thanks to support from the Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) Program.

The government-funded STRC program, delivered through Resthaven Northern Community Services, provides short term support for older people to recover from health setbacks and regain their independence – and thus avoid a move into residential aged care.

Mrs Rita Artis, Raymond’s wife, says, ‘Ray was depressed and on the verge of going to a nursing home.’

‘Prior to [Resthaven’s] help, I felt he would not have been able to stay at home.’

‘The wonderful people who came have made a huge difference to his life and wellbeing.’

‘The eight week program has been invaluable.’

‘Ray and I were absolutely satisfied with the professional care which was provided, plus all of the equipment.’

‘In the eight weeks [of the program], we have had setbacks, but Ray is so much better. We think it’s a wonderful program.’

Mrs Artis arranges weekly bingo sessions in their retirement living community and Ray calls them. She says, ‘Ray called his first bingo night this week after his fall and rehabilitation through the STRC program. He was a little nervous at the start, but loved it, and did a great job as usual.’

‘Thank you for Resthaven’s kind, professional help, which has kept my love at home where he belongs.’

This couple have been together 57 years, and are delighted that they can stay that way.

Manager, Karen Hammond, says, ‘We sincerely thank Ray and Rita for their kind words.’

‘Our staff work hard to deliver positive outcomes for clients, and this story is a great example of how Resthaven works together with customers through collaboration, consultation, and care.’

‘Along with the Short-Term Restorative Care Program, Resthaven Northern Community Services provides centre-based wellness services, social groups, outings, and in-home care, supporting older people in the northern areas to remain living independently in their own homes.’

‘In response to demand, an outreach office at 5 King Street, Gawler, opened in 2020, expanding services into the lower Barossa.’
