    International Nurses Day 2020

Celebrating Julie’s 50+ year nursing career on International Nurses Day

2020 has been designated by the World Health Organisation as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and also marks 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale.

Resthaven Clinical Nurse Workforce Development, Julie Tansing, who herself celebrates 51 years of nursing this year, says, ‘Although nurses will celebrate differently this year due to COVID-19, it is important that they, and we, still recognise the important work they do.’

‘Nurses are the biggest group of health professionals in the health and aged care system.’

‘To all Resthaven nurses, we encourage you to take the time to support and congratulate your peers in some way on 12 May, even though we cannot gather together and celebrate as usual.’

Julie has had a long and rewarding career, beginning at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in 1969.

She went on to work in midwifery at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, before returning to the QEH. In 1986, she moved into community health and specialist rooms.

Julie says, ‘I continued in various nursing roles, before successfully applying to Resthaven in 2003, becoming a Trainer, and later Coordinator, in the Training and Development team (now Workforce Development).’

‘In 2012, I became the Preceptor for the Resthaven Graduate Nurse Program.’

‘Resthaven’s nine-month Graduate Nurse Program supports nurses as they transition from university to a full-time nursing career, with mentoring support, education and guidance.’

‘Resthaven is unique in offering such a program in the Australian aged care setting.’

International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12 May (the birthday of Florence Nightingale) each year, and celebrates the contribution that nurses make to societies around the world.

    Happy International Nurses Day!
