Redevelopment at Resthaven Westbourne Park underway

Fifty years since opening its doors, Resthaven Westbourne Park at 30 Sussex Terrace, Westbourne Park, is undergoing a redevelopment.

Resthaven has a long-term strategy in place to update all buildings to meet current and future expectations. The redevelopment at Westbourne Park includes the planned process of replacing all shared rooms with single rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Emmet O’Donovan, Manager, Building and Capital Projects, says ‘Work is progressing well. The foundations of a new building on Norseman Terrace are complete, and erection of the structure has commenced.’

‘Internal work in the existing building commenced recently. The project also includes an upgrade to the entrance, enlargement and upgrade of the reception area to provide a meeting place and café, and incorporate an open courtyard to create an active entry area. The manager’s office will be relocated to enable this expansion.’

Marian Greenshields, Manager Residential Services, says ‘A particularly welcome addition will be the introduction of a 16 place secure dementia care area that includes a sensory garden.’

‘This will offer much-needed accommodation that is appropriate for people in need of this level of support, and the sensory garden will offer a peaceful place to bring memories flooding back.’

Some stormwater modifications to the site will be undertaken, with works anticipated to be completed by mid-2018.

Resthaven Westbourne Park is a purpose built aged care home that has offered support for older people since 1967. Over the years, a number of redevelopments have occurred. The current $6 million project will improve accommodation choices and options and better meet the needs and expectations of the 129 current residents.
