Resthaven promotes active ageing in Asia

On Tuesday 19 September, Resthaven staff are presenting at the Active Ageing Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

The conference opening ceremony will be performed by the Australian Ambassador to Thailand, His Excellency Mr Paul Robilliard, with a welcome by Resthaven CEO Richard Hearn, and Baan Sudthavas Foundation (BSV) Chairman, Arnop Chirakiti.

Key note speakers are Dr Mike Rungie, member of the SA Economic Development Board, Ms Jane Mussared, Chief Executive Officer, Council On The Ageing (COTA) South Australia, and Professor Renuka Visvanathan, Director of Aged and Extended Care Services, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Ms Kelly Geister, Resthaven Senior Manager Residential Services, who will speak on the value of nursing leadership and clinical governance.

‘Clinical governance is so important in aged care for the wellbeing of residents’, says Kelly.

‘But the key to success in any home, is that it needs “champions” who work “on the floor” directly with residents and clients to take the lead and promote its importance. And who better to be the champions than nurse leaders?’

‘I am passionate about this topic, and hope to spread my enthusiasm with the conference participants to share amongst their colleagues.’

Arnop from BSV with Resthaven bannersIn addition, Stacey Thompson, Manager Volunteer Services, and Lynn Openshaw, Manager Service Development, will host a workshop to discuss the important role that volunteers play in promoting Active Ageing, and explore the ‘who’, ‘why’ and ‘what’ of volunteer programs.

‘Volunteering is not a well–known concept in most South East Asian countries’, says Stacey, ‘Although the notion of giving back is important in Thailand.’

‘Having assisted our conference partners, Baan Sudthavas Foundation (BSV), with their aged care model over several years, they have willingly adopted the concept in their home.’

‘They recognise the benefits that volunteers bring to aged care, having seen our model in action several times. They know that it works well, and how well it supports residents, staff and family members.’

Resthaven’s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn social media pages will post regular updates before and during the conference.
