New creative outlet as Resthaven residents try art therapy

Residents at Resthaven Westbourne Park have been exploring their creative side, taking part in art therapy sessions run by the SEW Program (Supporting Emotional Wellbeing in Aged Care) from Relationships Australia.

‘Most of us consider art projects to be a fun, relaxing way for people of all ages to express their creativity,’ Rachael Ross, Lifestyle Coordinator at Resthaven Westbourne Park says. ‘But it’s also a great way for residents to connect with each other and to socialise in a different way.’

Art Therapist Carley Milich, from Relationships Australia, agrees: ‘Creativity is great for maintaining brain plasticity and it supports good mental health.’

A group of eight residents at Resthaven Westbourne Park are taking part in the four, fortnightly sessions. Carley is visiting the site each fortnight, bringing a host of art supplies which the residents can choose from to use during the sessions. Supplies for everything from colouring and drawing, painting, and moulding clay is available.

‘The sessions can also evoke feelings from childhood,’ Rachael says. ‘It’s great to be able to work with Relationships Australia to offer this to the residents.’
