• Volunteers have ‘500’ in the Bag

Volunteer, Jenny Irving, has introduced a card game at Resthaven Mount Gambier that is keeping everyone on their toes.

‘500’ is a ‘trick-taking’ game which requires a lot of brain power, and involves a complicated bidding and scoring process.

‘It’s not for the faint hearted,’ says Jenny, ‘but it’s so popular with residents that some of them play it twice a week, and at other times in their rooms.’

‘Scoring is a huge responsibility, especially when it’s taken so seriously – we would be in trouble if we made a mistake!’

It’s lucky, then, that four volunteers support the card playing sessions: Jenny, Felicia Pentland, Angela Magnisalis and Sheryl Langley.

‘This is just one of many stories of the vibrancy, joy and support that volunteers bring across Resthaven,’ says Resthaven Manager, Volunteer Services, Stacey Thompson.

‘In honour of National Volunteers Week from 9-13 May, Resthaven is celebrating volunteers across the whole month of May with “Thank You” High Teas. The theme this year is “Viva Volunteers!”’

On Friday 27 May at 2.00pm, volunteers such as Jenny will enjoy their ‘Viva Volunteers’ High Tea at Resthaven Mount Gambier, 24 Elizabeth Street, Mount Gambier. Volunteers from Resthaven Limestone Coast Community Services will also join in the fun.

‘Volunteers increase our flexibility, expertise, energy and social connections. Resthaven’s community wouldn’t be the same without the power of volunteers,’ says Stacey.
