Home Support Worker connects with French client

    Puzzles and hearts at Resthaven

Puzzles are not the only reason Mrs Helene La Bonte enjoys her weekly visits from Home Support Worker, Alyson, and it’s easy to see why!

Resthaven Marion Community Services Coordinator, Monika, explains, ‘Alyson has been visiting Mrs Bonte every week for the past six months for social support.’

‘Born in Mauritius, Mrs Bonte’s first language is French, and she has found it difficult to communicate with others in English—with a negative impact on her independence.’

‘Alyson began bringing a game of scrabble with her, with the aim of helping improve her English in an engaging way.’

‘During the visits, they would listen to Mrs Bonte’s favourite French singer, Georges Guétary, and she decided one day that she would like to tackle a jigsaw puzzle.’

For the next four weeks, the pair continued listening to music, while working on the 1,000-piece puzzle together.

‘Sharing stories and culture was an important part of their visits, and now, Mrs Bonte feels confident in her communication skills, and has enjoyed social connections along the way.’

‘With effective communication, kindness, and lots of laughter, anything is possible.’

Mrs Bonte’s story is one of many examples of Resthaven staff overcoming language barriers, and assisting clients to maintain their independence at home.

Resthaven home support services are tailored to reflect our client’s needs, choices and interests. Working together with them, we offer both long and short-term support.
