More than just a drive thanks to Home Care Package

Resthaven Marion Community Services client, Mr Charles Wauchope, has found a way to continue doing what he loves, thanks to the support that Resthaven provides.

Mr Wauchope has always enjoyed going on outings, however, his sight has declined over the years, and he is now no longer able to drive.

‘His wife, Carlene, still takes Charles out on short trips. They both previously enjoyed longer country drives but find this is no longer possible,’ says Home Support Worker, Bruce.

‘As part of Charles’ Home Care Package, I take them both on longer drives – which I can see has made a huge difference in his life.’

One of their recent trips was a drive down to the Noarlunga Wetlands Trail. After a stroll along the boardwalk and surrounding area, they continued their drive to Sellicks Beach.

‘For lunch, we stopped to get fish and chips, and found a nice spot to sit at the cliff top – overlooking the bay out to the Gulf of St Vincent.’

‘They both kept saying how wonderful it was to be able to get out and do what they love, even after all this time.’

After lunch, on the return journey home, they decided to drive down onto the beach and along the sand towards Aldinga.

‘We had such beautiful weather – the car windows were down, and although Charles has some sight issues, he said he could hear the waves and smell the ocean, bringing back fond childhood memories.’elderly couple walking by the beach

‘These trips not only benefit Charles, but his relationship with Carlene – they reminisce about their lives together, enjoy meals out and see some places that they have visited in their past.’

‘When Carlene reminds Charles that they have an outing coming up, he is always looking forward to spending time out with Carlene – it is truly wonderful to see and is part of the reason why I do what I do.’

‘As a Home Support Worker, it is a privilege to spend time with clients.’

‘It is fulfilling to be able to assist in some small way to enriching their quality of life, by simply assisting with tasks that we might take for granted.’
