‘Aged care is rewarding,’ says 10-year volunteer, Jenny Dow

This year, Jenny Dow celebrated her tenth anniversary as a volunteer with Resthaven Mount Gambier; however, her volunteering years go way back.

Jenny says, ‘My first experience was at my youngest daughter’s school 24 years ago. I had extra time and wanted to give back.’

Since then, Jenny has taken on more in her local community, including her long-term contribution to the Salvation Army, where she continues to volunteer.

‘Ten years ago, I found a volunteering role advertised at Resthaven Mount Gambier. I walked in one day, and that was it really—the process was quite smooth.’

Jenny began volunteering on site twice a week, helping with the musical group, craft group, calling bingo, and happy hour.

‘The Lifestyle Coordinator at the time played the organ to residents in the musical group, and once I told her I could sing, we became a duo.’

Jenny credits her dedication to the connection she shares with residents.

‘I thoroughly enjoy sitting down with residents for a chat, and we gain a lot from each other.’

‘Aged care is rewarding—if you’ve experienced it, you will know. We learn and grow so much from older people, and they are so willing and grateful to have your time.’

In May 2023, Jenny was delighted to receive her 10-year recognition award at the Resthaven volunteer celebration. One week prior, she proudly accepted an award from The South Australian Volunteer Awards for the Barker region.

Congratulations on your deserving awards, Jenny, and thank you for your contribution to Resthaven Mount Gambier.
