Milestone birthday in courtyard gardens at Resthaven Mitcham

When Resthaven Mitcham resident, Mrs Margaret Edwards, turned 80, she could think of no better place for a celebration than the brand new site courtyard gardens and barbeque area.

‘The new gardens, which opened in January, are very popular with residents,’ says Lifestyle Coordinator, Sylvia Ortiz.

‘The plants have quickly established, with beautiful flowers blooming and creepers climbing up the covered pergolas.’

‘There are cozy wooden benches dotted along the paths, for residents to stop and enjoy the gardens, along with some very comfy outdoor couches.’

‘The couches, in particular, were popular with Mrs Edwards and her family, who utilised our new barbeque facilities for the birthday lunch.’

‘We were really pleased to be able to accommodate a family celebration like this.’

The $14 million Resthaven Mitcham redevelopment is in its final stages and is due for completion in late May 2018. The redevelopment will result in all single rooms with ensuites for residents, with rooms that can accommodate couples if preferred. This brings the accommodation to a standard expected now and into the future.

Mandy Hutchinson, Manager Residential Services, Resthaven Mitcham, says, ‘The Resthaven Mitcham redevelopment is moving along smoothly. The site community has been very patient throughout the building works, and we appreciate everyone’s patience.’

‘The final stage involved temporarily relocating the front entrance from Hill Street – back to Smith-Dorrien Street, where it was for ten years. The main entrance will return to Hill Street when the building work is complete.’

Purpose built in 1962, Resthaven Mitcham is just one of Resthaven’s eleven fully accredited residential homes located across South Australia, with a twelfth home opening at Aberfoyle Park in June.

Resthaven supports older people to live independently in their own homes through a range of in-home and centre-based community services.
