Resthaven’s first Exercise Physiologist, Hillary Williams
Flinders University graduate, Hillary Williams, is starting her career off strongly, as Resthaven’s first ever Exercise Physiologist, adding to Resthaven’s existing suite of allied health and wellness services for older people.
Not one to shy away from ‘firsts’, Hillary was part of the first cohort to complete the new exercise physiology degree at Flinders University — a Bachelor of Exercise Science and Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.
After completing her five years of study, including work experience in the aged care sector, Hillary graduated in 2021, and that’s when she saw the opening for an Exercise Physiologist role with Resthaven.
Hillary explains, ‘I had always been passionate about the importance of exercise for older people, so this role was the perfect opportunity for me to further develop my skills and make a real difference.’
Based full-time at Resthaven Paradise & Eastern Community Services at 61 Silkes Road, Paradise, Hillary hosts a range of exercise classes for older people, including aquatic, dance, resistance training, and cardiovascular activities.
‘My exercise classes are focused on improving strength, fitness and balance, and can be tailored to clients’ individual needs,’ Hillary explains.
‘I like to introduce variety and try something new in each class, and clients are always super motivated to challenge themselves or each other!’
‘The classes are also a great social catch-up, as most clients have known each other for a very long time.’
‘It’s lovely to see that they value the benefit of fitness and can have fun doing it together!’
Hillary also assesses clients and develops individualised Health and Wellness Programs, helping them maintain their physical and mental health, and remain living at home and leading an independent lifestyle.
In addition to onsite classes, Hillary also offers in-home health and wellness activities, which clients can enjoy in the comfort of their own homes.
One of Hillary’s clients, Mr Bevan Mills (pictured above left), can testify to the benefits of Hillary’s program.
Mr Mills says, ‘I have been attending Hillary’s general exercise classes for some time now, and she is so attentive.’
‘She has created a home exercise program for me that is tailored for my health condition, which is such a great help!’
Now in the role for six months, Hillary says, ‘I’m excited to see where this role takes me into the future’.
So do we, Hillary!
