    The age of centenarians

Embracing independence at home with Resthaven

Mrs Gloria Merson, Mr Cyril Price, and Mrs Patricia Mackey are just a few Resthaven clients who have celebrated their centenarian milestones in their own homes this year. However, they are far from the only ones—and the trend is growing.

In 2014, ten residents and clients celebrated their milestone birthdays—three of them in their own homes.

Since January 2023, 42 Resthaven residents and clients have celebrated their 100th birthdays, 25 of whom live independently in their own homes.

The International Journal of Population Data Science found that Australia’s centenarian population grew from 500 in 1981, to over 3,900 by 2016—equivalent to an annual average growth rate of 5.9%.

Further to this, the Australian Bureau of Statistics project that the number of Australians aged 85 years and over will double by 2042, increasing to over 1 million people.

It is clear there is a significant increase in older people living longer, and interestingly, in their own homes for longer.

Resthaven plays a crucial role in providing the support that enables older South Australians to live independently in their own homes—offering personalised support, companionship, and assistance with daily tasks, with services spanning across metropolitan and regional areas.

At the age of 91, Mrs Gloria Merson (pictured above left) moved into her home at Resthaven Elizabeth North Retirement Living, where she has made many friends over the years.

Now, at 101 years of age, Mrs Merson shares:

‘It’s a wonderful community here, and we all look out for each other.’

Mr Cyril Price (pictured above centre), of Resthaven Limestone Coast Community Services, shares a similar sentiment:

‘I am thankful to continue living in my own home, with the support of Resthaven.’

Mrs Patricia Mackey (pictured above right), of Resthaven Marion Retirement Living, is equally as thrilled to live independently at 100, energised to continue giving back to the community:

‘Now, I like to knit socks and beanies for the homeless that I donate to charity, and I remain active in the Resthaven community.’

As time continues, we can expect more and more people will live longer in their own homes, with the increasing need for aged care services in the community.
